This year, according to the International Maritime Bureau (IMB), piracy has risen to record levels (we’re assuming this is since the IMB began keeping statistics related to piracy and not in the historical sense). Somali pirates have been the biggest factor, accounting for 56% of all attacks so far this year. While this is troublesome to folks in the field of international logistics, there is some good news. This year, while attempts are up, successful pirating of commercial vessels is down. Only 12% of attacks in 2011 have resulted in hijackings versus 28% last year. The IMB credits international naval forces and more savvy crew for the decline in pirating success. You can see the IMB Live Piracy Map at: http://www.icc-ccs.org/livepiracymap |
