The D-Day Invasion

added Jul 6, 2011

As people who live and breathe logistics, we can't imagine what it must have been like to coordinate the D-Day invasion. According to the D-Day Museum's official site the Allies landed around 156,000 troops in Normandy on June 6, 1944. In support, Allied aircraft flew 14,674 sorties, 867 gliders and 2,395 planes were utilized for the airborne attacks and 6,939 ships were backing them up and putting soldiers ashore, manned by some 195,700 sailors.

All this while being shot at.

By D-Day +5, 326,547 troops, 54,186 vehicles and 104,428 tons of supplies had landed on the beaches. That's some serious horsepower. One month ago today was the 67th anniversary of D-Day, which, to all of us here at RBW, is still one of the greatest accomplishments in human history in terms of both coordination and courage.
