Eulogy For The Citizens Band Radio

CB

That's a Big 10-4

added Jun 6th, 2011

Better known as the CB Radio to those that knew it well, CB has now been laid to rest. Replaced by more cutting edge forms of communication, the CB had been an integral part of this country’s transportation system since its introduction in 1945.

While virtually gone, you will never be forgotten, CB.

Following the oil crisis in 1973, the U.S. imposed the national speed limit at 55 mph. At the same time, fuel shortages and rationing were widespread, and the CB radio was there for us. It helped truckers locate gas stations with better supplies of fuel and also notify one another of speed traps (also known as a “bear in the grass”). The CB radio was also the staple that allowed for truckers to coordinate and organize blockades and conveys in an attempt to protest the new speed limit and other trucking regulations.

While the CB radio gave us a needed form of mobile communication, it gave us so much more than that. It gave a persona to life on the road, and with the help of Smokey and the Bandit and Convey, portrayed that to American popular culture.

Signing off, 10-7.
